The successful candidate will be responsible for the ongoing architecture, enhancement, and support of critical SQL Server database platforms that drive operational and functional efficiencies across the enterprise. In this role, the candidate will work closely with Penn National Gaming's IT team members, technology vendors and business partners to enable new capabilities and ensure existing capabilities continue to function. Candidate will also have the opportunity to participate in the identification and evaluation of new technologies that drive toward business objectives.

Your daily responsibilities include

  • Participate in project planning, scoping and estimating associated with enhancements to database platforms.
  • Configuration and administration of assigned database platforms.
  • Engage external providers to resolve an issues in the functionality and interoperability of new and existing SQL Server database systems. This may include working with internal team members and vendors to aid in troubleshooting application issues as they related to the underlying databases.
  • Participate in definition of best-in-class database architectures.
  • Develop technical documentation related to the supported database environments.
  • Partner with business and technology subject-matter experts to translate business requirements into technology solutions.
  • Coordinate with enterprise architects and information architects to ensure new technologies align to roadmaps and to understand the impact on the organization’s information architecture.
  • Provide database support for IT staff at properties.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field; must have a broad technical background.
  • 6+ years of experience as a database administrator.
  • Strong technical and problem resolution skills.
  • Test backups to ensure we can meet the business recovery time objectives.
  • Troubleshoot SQL Server service outages as they occur, including after hours and weekends.
  • Ensure all database servers are backed up in a way that meets the business recovery point objectives.
  • Configure SQL Server monitoring utilities to minimize false alarms.
  • Install and configure new SQL Servers.
  • When performance issues arise, determine the most effective way to improve performance including server configuration changes, or index/query changes.
  • Document the company’s database environment.
  • Strong functional understanding of failover clustering, SAN replication, and other high availability technologies.

A successful candidate must have a proven ability to work effectively in a team environment. Strong customer service, interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills are required. Must have the ability to establish effective priorities among competing requirements. Meets deadlines while demonstrating a successful hands-on approach to overseeing all assigned projects. Must possess strong administrative, analytical, time and project management and decision-making skills. Experience working directly with customers in understanding business needs is required. Possess a basic knowledge of the Sarbanes Oxley Act and its impact on data security and change management controls.

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to communicate and instruct new users on new and existing platforms. Respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to effectively present information to senior management.

 

REASONING ABILITY

Must possess the ability to determine department systematic needs and recommend changes. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Candidate must be able to qualify for licenses and permits required by federal, state, and local regulations.

 

Must possess a valid driver’s license and have acceptable driving history as determined by Penn National Gaming’s auto insurance carrier.
