An individual could be successful if they possess the following.

Your daily responsibilities include

  • Must enforce the Ohio Racing Commission Rules of Racing while on the racetrack, writing reports of all violations that take place while on duty
  • Ensures starting car vehicle is in proper working order prior to each race
  • Responsible for regular proper servicing and maintenance on car and mechanical gate systems
  • Once on racetrack with horses ensures proper parading of horses leading up to start of race
  • Works with the judges and outrider to ensure races go off at prescribed time
  • Ensures all horses are in proper starting position leading up to start of race
  • Must control speed of starting gate and starts race at correct position to ensure fair and safe start for all participants
  • During race acts as patrol judge and is in constant communication with Judges in citing any infractions witnessed on racetrack
  • Assists horse ambulance workers to remove injured horse from track
  • Must be available to work for any training, schooling, racing or qualifying hours

To be successful in this position it will require the following skill set

  • Must be 21 years of age
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Must be licensed by Ohio Racing Commission
  • Must have Starters license from United States Trotting Association
  • Must have current and valid driver’s license
  • Must be knowledgeable of the Ohio Racing Commission Rules of Racing
  • Read, write legibly, understand and speak English
  • Excellent customer service/communication skills
  • Must meet professional appearance standards as prescribed by company policy
  • Must be able to respond to visual and oral cues
  • Able to work at a fast pace in often crowded/noisy environment
  • Physically mobile with reasonable accommodations including ability to push, pull, carry and lift up to 50 lbs., and the ability to push, pull, reach, bend, twist, stoop, stack, crouch, kneel and balance when performing job duties in varying work areas such as confined spaces
